Identity of body discovered on Deer Park Road still unknown

Remains to be transported for autopsy

PORT ANGELES — The identity of a man whose body was discovered Monday on Deer Park Road near Olympic National Park remained a mystery Tuesday, more than 24 hours after the corpse was found.

“We have absolutely zero identification on the deceased right now,” Sheriff’s Sgt. Eric Munger said Tuesday.

Munger said foul play is not suspected in the man’s death.

By Friday, the badly decomposed, fully clothed remains will be transported for an autopsy to determine how the man died and what led to his demise, Clallam County Prosecuting Attorney-Coroner Mark Nichols said Tuesday.

“I would hope we would have a preliminary result, at least verbally, within a week or so,” Nichols said.

“Given the level of decomposition, that might slow it down.”

The remains were found around mid-day Monday outside of a remote residence in the 8100 block of Deer Park Road eight miles up the thoroughfare.

The 19-acre parcel lies next to the historic Danz Ranch at the boundary to Olympic National Park.

Munger said authorities are interviewing people who know the person who lives on the parcel.

“He’s not someone who normally associates much with the outside world,” Munger said.

A camper staying on an adjacent private parcel saw cats scampering up the driveway around noon Monday, he said.

“The cats kept running up and down the driveway,” Munger said.

“He followed the cats and discovered the body.”
