Ice skating free for active duty military on Friday

Peninsula Daily News

PORT ANGELES — Active duty military members and their families will be able to skate for free on Friday at the Winter Ice Village in Port Angeles.

The U.S. Coast Guard local Chief Petty Officer Association will staff all of the volunteer positions at the village Friday, the Port Angeles Chamber of Commerce stated in a press release.

The ice village, postponed from last November due to the pandemic, is open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. through April 18.

Tickets for the general public, including rentals for skates and a helmet, are $5 from 9 a.m. to noon, $10 from noon to 3 p.m. and $15 from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The rink will be open to the public Friday in addition to the free active duty military day.

No reservations are required to skate, but they are encouraged because only 90 skaters are allowed at any one time. To make a reservation, go to www.wintericevillage.com.

Skaters must also have on file a signed waiver, which can be found at the same website. One waiver is applicable for the entire season.

The ice village, produced by the chamber, is following guidance from the Clallam County Health Department to keep people safe during the pandemic.

It has received hundreds of donated volunteer hours as well as sponsorships and donations from local companies, including Strait View Credit Union, North Olympic Healthcare Network, Lakeside Industries, First Federal, Wilder Auto & RV, State Farm Insurance, Kitsap Bank, OSP Sling, Hermann Bros., Bedford Sodas, Country Aire Natural Foods, Platypus Marine, Angeles Electric, Todd Hayworth Dentistry, Port Angeles Realty and Olympic Medical Center, in addition to funding from the Clallam County Lodging Tax Fund, the chamber stated in a press release.
