Hundreds of canines expected to compete in Hurricane Ridge Kennel Club show

SEQUIM — Hurricane Ridge Kennel Club officials expect several hundred dogs to participate in the club’s 14th annual dog show this weekend.

The dog show, which has contests by breed as well as obedience trials, will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day today through Sunday.

Dogs numbering in the hundreds will descend on the Blake family property adjacent to Carrie Blake Park in Sequim for the three-day event.

To participate in the breed contests, a dog must be registered with the American Kennel Club and must be purebred, said Elaine Booker, treasurer for the Hurricane Ridge Kennel Club.

From all over country

“We have dogs from all over the country,” she said.

“Last year, we had a dog come all the way from New York.

“We also have some handlers that handle shows at Westminster, which are publicized on TV.

“This is a really big deal for the area.”

Participants can earn points toward a championship or even complete earning points toward a championship or obedience title, Booker said.

Although she won’t be participating this year — her German shepherd is still a puppy — she said plenty of local residents will show dogs.

“We have members from Sequim, Port Angeles and Port Townsend, and I know they’ll all be there,” she said.

Public invited

Kennel club officials hope people not participating in the show will come to watch and admire the dogs.

Organizers ask that observers be respectful by not making excessive noise or movements that could distract dogs.

“They should be trained not to do that,” Booker said. “But in a strange location, it is more easy to distract them.”

Admission for observers is free. Parking is free today, and $3 per day on the weekend, or $5 for both Saturday and Sunday.

Dogs not participating are not allowed on the site.
