Hundreds meander through Saar’s in Port Angeles on first day of soft opening

PORT ANGELES — The line for Saar’s Super Saver Foods’ soft opening in Port Angeles on Wednesday stretched around the building as customers waited to check out the city’s newest grocery store.

It was the most activity the store at 114 E. Lauridsen Blvd. has seen since it was vacated by Haggen in April 2016.

“Customers came in real early,” said Kyle Saar, the company’s general manager and whose father owns the company. “When we did the opening we were giving away 200 free items to start out with and we gave those away in five minutes.

“I’d say there were at least 200 to 300 people.”

For the first five days of business, the store is giving away items to the first 200 people who stop by the store, starting at 8 a.m.

Now that the store that says it features “rock bottom prices” is open, its doors will stay open 24/7.

On Saturday, the store will host a grand opening celebration, featuring vendors and sponsors who will offer free samples and prizes in the parking lot. The store will have prizes and will raffle off items such as a television set, grill and a fire pit.

Customers will be able to buy hot dogs and soda for 25 cents, Saar said.

The company previously owned Saar’s Market Place in Port Angeles, but that store closed in 2011, about a year after the Walmart Supercenter moved to the east side of Port Angeles.

The former store, a 25,000-square-foot store on the east side of Port Angeles, is about half the size of the new building, which is more than 47,000 square feet.

The new Port Angeles location features a deli and a bakery and has a variety of ethnic foods, boasting large selections of Asian and Hispanic foods.
