Work crews are using the wee hours of weekend mornings to test and measure the draw span openings on the Hood Canal Bridge as part of the floating span’s retrofit project.
But no draw span openings on the bridge are scheduled for Memorial Day weekend, May 27-31, the state Department of Transportation announced.
Periodic draw span openings, lasting up to 90 minutes, are being done from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Crews must gather measurements of how the bridge rides in the water when the draw span is in the open position.
The measurements will be used in the design, manufacture and installation of the new draw span systems, part of the $255 million west-half retrofit and east-half replacement project.
But crews will pass this weekend in deference to holiday weekend traffic coming to the North Olympic Peninsula, DOT said in a statement.
