PORT ANGELES — Wondering about that white powdery stuff on your squash leaves? Don’t know when to harvest your garlic? Want red, not green tomatoes this year?
Home gardeners can get advice from master gardeners about vegetable gardening from noon to 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8, at the Fifth Street Community Garden, 328 E. Fifth St.
The event is part of the free Lunch in the Garden educational series sponsored by WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners on the second Friday of each month.
During Lunch in the Garden, master gardeners lead a one-hour walk through the community garden to show home gardeners what needs to be done in vegetable gardens at that time and what problems are likely to appear.
They also answer questions and share recipes that use fresh local produce.
This month, Bob Cain, Laurel Moulton and Jeanette Stehr-Green — all veteran master gardeners — will talk about cleaning produce, dealing with powdery mildew, harvesting garlic, how to get tomatoes to ripen, fall gardening and crop rotation.
Bob Cain joined Master Gardeners in 2009 and was Clallam County Master Gardener Foundation president from 2011-13.
Laurel Moulton has been a Master Gardener since 2006 and coordinated the WSU Master Gardener Program in Clallam County from 2012-14.
Jeanette Stehr-Green has been a Master Gardener since 2003 and was the 2012 Clallam County Veteran Master Gardener of the Year.
All three have been growing vegetables and herbs for many years.
The Fifth Street Community Garden is just off Peabody Street, across from City Hall.
The garden includes more than 50 plots that are each 9 feet by 12 feet.
The garden was developed on city property in 2011.
