Holiday meals attract hundreds of diners

More than 300 people helped themselves to traditional Thanksgiving Day dinners and gave thanks Thursday during community events in Chimacum and Port Angeles.

In Chimacum, 150 meals were served at the Tri-Area Community Center, 10 West Valley Road, said event coordinator Linda Haskell, director of development for the sponsoring Olympic Community Action Programs.

It as the 13th anniversary of the meal at the community center.

An additional 60 meals were delivered to people in their homes or apartments, she said.

“So far we’ve served 210 meals,” Haskell said early Thanksgiving afternoon.

“We’ve had about 35 volunteers coming in to help with everything from playing music to cooking, and serving to doing the dishes.”

OlyCAP helped organize the meals in Chimacum.

In Port Angeles, Serenity House case manager David Kolinsky said more than 100 people were expected at the 22nd annual community Thanksgiving dinner held at the Single Adult Shelter, 2321 W. 18th St., Port Angeles.

Kolinsky said the event seemed to attract more people than last year.

Busy scurrying around the 10,000-square-foot building to ensure everything was operating smoothly, Kolinsky said he would eat “when everything quiets down.”

Besides turkey, the menu featured the traditional fixin’s — mashed potatoes and gravy, yams, green bean salad, rolls, a vegetable tray with dip, fruit salad, pumpkin and other pies, and coffee, milk and juices.
