The tiny, cash-strapped Hoh reservation hosted 24 Paddle Journey tribal canoes on Thursday.
The canoes had pulled for almost five hours from LaPush to reach one of the smallest and most isolated reservations on the North Olympic Peninsula.
“We are but a small village, but we will give you everything we have” said Wade Greene, a tribal spokesman in helping to greet the canoeists.
Acting Hoh Chief Kalip — Daki Fisher — welcomed the canoes ashore quietly, dressed in formal headdress. His father, Chief Klya — Herb Fisher — was unable to meet the canoes because of a doctor’s appointment, but joined the festivities later in the day.
Daki Fisher, 22, said he was pleased to watch the canoes come ashore.
“The tribe is real honored to host the canoes,” he said. “This is a first for the tribe.”
