PORT TOWNSEND — A hiker’s three-hour detour worried his friends and family when they returned to their vehicle and he was nowhere to be found.
At about 4:33 p.m. Friday, Clallam County sheriff deputies responded to a report of a lost hiker around the Upper Mount Townsend trailhead.
Herbert Zachow, an 88-year-old Oregon resident, walked ahead of his group of family and friends and took the wrong trail. Zachow found himself on a gravel road and continued walking until he came across hikers from Clallam County.
One of the hikers called 9-1-1 emergency dispatchers at about 7:30 p.m. to report they had found Zachow.
“Herbert was in good health and happy,” according to Clallam County Sgt. Shaun Minks.
He was transported to the Longhouse Fuel Station and reunited with family and friends.
