PORT WILLIAMS — Clallam County Fire District No. 3’s rescue team safely plucked a 27-year-old Sequim hiker who was stranded midway on a 75-foot bluff near the Port Williams Beach boat ramp.
Jacqueline Mariott, a Sequim resident for about two years, was rescued from the precarious perch about 55 feet above the beach Monday night.
A 10-member rescue crew headed by Fire District Capt. Chris Turner and supervised by Assistant Fire Chief Ben Andrews used ropes to climb up the ledge and rappel her down.
The team was called to the scene by Mariott’s hiking friend, who called emergency 9-1-1 at 9:16 p.m.
Mariott was uninjured, said Fire District No. 3 spokesman Peter Loeb.
The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the scene and helped coordinate the swift rescue.
“She was climbing, and it got dark quickly, and the ground was unstable,” Loeb said. “It would have been a very dangerous plunge.”
Mariott was stranded on the bluff about 100 feet north of the Port Williams boat ramp at Marlyn Nelson Park on the East Sequim Bay shoreline.
The hiker accompanying her did not climb as high and was able to climb down to make the emergency call.
