Hiker flown to Seattle hospital after fall

PORT ANGELES — A 51-year-old woman was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle on Sunday after falling down an embankment on a trail in the Mount Muller area.

The woman, who was not identified, was hiking alone and called 911 at about 6:30 p.m. to say she was injured.

She had managed to climb back up the embankment to the trail, but she reported she was having difficulty breathing and was feeling dizzy before dispatchers lost contact with her.

Fearing that the woman’s injuries were significant and life-threatening, members of Clallam County Fire District 1 in Forks performed a quick search of the woman’s last known location and found her.

She was airlifted to Harborview by a U.S. Navy helicopter.

The Clallam County Search and Rescue team and Fire District 1 personnel were prepared to carry the woman out of the woods in case a helicopter rescue was not possible.

The woman’s identity or her condition were not available from the sheriff’s office report.
