DISCOVERY BAY — A woman was killed Friday when the car she was driving collided with a semi truck on state Highway 20 near Discovery Bay, the State Patrol said.
The woman, whose identity was being withheld Saturday pending notification of next of kin, was traveling eastbound in a 1998 Honda Civic when she drove into the eastbound ditch, over-corrected, crossed the center line and crashed into a westbound Kenworth truck and trailer driven by Jason Crawford, said Trooper Russ Winger, State Patrol spokesman.
Crawford, 42, of Port Townsend, was not injured, Winger said.
After the impact, the truck traveled an additional 300 feet down the road with the car pinned against it, Winger said.
“They skidded all the way down and crossed the eastbound lane and went into the ditch,” Winger said.
The wreck occurred at 10:44 a.m. near Moa Hill Road in Discovery Bay about a half-mile east of U.S. Highway 101, troopers said in a collision memo.
The highway was closed for more than seven hours while the State Patrol mapped the scene and crews removed the vehicles, car parts, engine parts and fluids from the road.
The roadway was closed in both directions until 5:49 p.m., the state Department of Transportation said.
It was unclear whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the wreck.
“That’s all under investigation at this point,” Winger said.
Both drivers were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, troopers said.
The 2010 semi had a trailer commonly used to transport wood chips, Winger said.
The trailer was not fully loaded at the time of the crash, Winger said.
Highway 20 was closed in both directions from U.S. Highway 101 to Eaglemount Road until crews cleared the scene.
