CHIMACUM — Both traffic lanes on state Highway 104 near Sandy Shore Road were opened at 5:46 p.m. Friday after a brush fire burned 5 acres nearby.
Sandy Shore Road was closed to all through traffic and the westbound lane of state Highway 104 was closed from about 1 p.m. Friday to late afternoon.
The fire was about 90 percent contained by 4 p.m. Friday, said Joe Smillie, state Department of Natural Resources (DNR) spokesman.
The fire moved northeast from Highway 104 off to the right of the westbound lanes at Sandy Shore Road near Milepost 6. Alternating traffic through one lane of Highway 104 was in effect Friday afternoon, with traffic is backed up for about 2 miles, according to the State Patrol.
Fire units from Jefferson, Clallam and Kitsap counties are assisting DNR, which was expected to have engines at the site throughout Friday night, Smillie said.
