Higher bail set at $50,000 for alleged Port Angeles bus assailant

PORT ANGELES — The bail for a Port Angeles man charged in the assault of a Clallam Transit bus driver and passenger last month has been raised to $50,000.

Bail for Riley Edge White was raised Friday after he allegedly violated orders to stay away from bus stops.

White, 59, was arrested June 17 at a Clallam Transit bus stop near the Clallam County Courthouse one day after he posted $30,000 bond in the assault case.

He is charged with first-degree attempted kidnapping, first-degree attempted robbery and two counts of second-degree assault for allegedly attacking bus driver Joy Crummett and 80-year-old Angeline Olsen on a Transit bus May 28.

White was attempting to start the bus when Port Angeles police arrived, court papers said.

White was served May 31 with a notice of exclusion from Clallam Transit vehicles, marked bus stops and other Clallam Transit facilities.

Waiting for taxi

White told Port Angeles police that he had been waiting for a taxi at the bus stop on the morning of June 17 but had only reached a taxi service answering machine, court papers said.

“White had just got out of jail yesterday and returned today for his medications, which he had with him,” Port Angeles Police Officer David Dombrowski wrote in a June 17 arrest report.

“I transported him back to jail. Once inside he told jailers something to the effect of, ‘I guess I should read the paperwork more carefully next time.’ ”

Criminal trespass

White was charged Monday in Clallam County District Court with second-degree criminal trespass for violating the exclusion.

In a Friday court hearing, Superior Court Judge Brian Coughenour found probable cause that White had violated his conditions of release.

Coughenour granted Chief Criminal Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Michele Devlin’s motion to raise White’s bail to $50,000.

The $50,000 bail includes a $30,000 bail bond that White previously paid.

White would need to post an additional $20,000 to make bail on the felony case and meet a $1,000 bail obligation on his District Court matter to get out of jail for a second time this month.

White faces an Aug. 17 trial on the misdemeanor trespassing case and a July 18 trial on the felony case.

One of the felony assault charges is for strangulation, and the other carries a special allegation that White caused the reckless infliction of substantial bodily harm on a vulnerable victim.

Crummett and Olsen were treated at Olympic Medical Center in Port Angeles and discharged after the attack. Both are reported to be recovering at their homes.
