PORT ANGELES — Two people were in the Clallam County jail Wednesday after a nighttime car chase from Ediz Hook to Fourth Street on New Year’s Day that reached speeds of 60 mph.
The car had been reported stolen from Tacoma, Port Angeles Deputy Police Chief Brian Smith said Wednesday in an email.
The chase ended at about 10 p.m. on Fourth Street just south of the Nippon Paper Industries USA Inc. mill, Smith said.
Port Angeles police arrested the driver, Korrynne Raquelle Quintanilla, 22, for investigation of possessing a stolen vehicle and Shawn Michael Clark, 26, for investigation of possessing methamphetamine, he added.
Clark was being held in jail Wednesday, with no bail set, while Quintanilla had been released as of Wednesday afternoon.
Two other passengers in the car were released, Smith added.
A Port Angeles police officer ran the license plates of an occupied car parked on Ediz Hook at 9:57 p.m. Tuesday and found it had been reported stolen, Smith said.
The car then started up and drove west toward the Nippon plant “at a high rate of speed,” Smith said, eventually driving as fast as 60 mph.
Several officers responded and tracked the car along Marine Drive and west on West Hill Street, and eventually stopped the car in the 2000 block of West Fourth Street after Fourth Street was blocked off, Smith said.
The car was impounded to be returned to the owner in Tacoma, Smith said.
Five Port Angeles police officers and one officer from the Lower Elwha Tribal Police were involved in the vehicle stop and the arrests.
