PORT ANGELES — More than 300 Port Angeles High School musicians and singers will take part in the first live broadcast of the school’s annual holiday concert tonight when the event is streamed on the Internet.
It’s a great opportunity for grandparents and other relatives who live out of the area to listen to their student’s holiday performance, said Lisa Hitt, studio broadcast instructor at the North Olympic Peninsula Skills Center.
Tonight’s free concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Port Angeles High School Performing Arts Center (auditorium), 304 E. Park Ave.
Online viewers can watch the concert on the student-run PATV television studio through a link at www.nopsc.org or at www.ustream.tv, where viewers can search for the PATV broadcasting channel.
Those who plan to watch the concert using a smartphone will need to download a phone application at www.ustream.tv to view the webcast.
The concert features five bands, three string orchestras and four choirs, as well as a mixed symphonic and choir performance.
There are more than 300 students taking part in this year’s concert, said Principal Garry Cameron.
While the concert is free, donations to the music program are appreciated.
Concert-goers are encouraged to arrive early for the best seating at the traditionally well-attended event.
On Monday, students in the North Olympic Peninsula Skills Center broadcast production program were at the auditorium setting up cameras and testing lighting while choirs and bands rehearsed.
Cameron Bluenthenthal, 16, a Sequim High School junior and second-year skills center broadcast-production student, will direct the broadcast and select feed from four high-definition cameras at a video booth.
Students in the broadcast television production class made use of the new high-definition studio cameras recently donated to the program by Darwin Gearey, a retired Port Angeles television producer.
Bluenthenthal tested his camera angles on a choir, planning how to use the one mobile and three fixed cameras, as other students worked out how to hide or cover the many wires needed to carry the video feed.
Skills center students’ first webcast was the Port Angeles High School Class of 2013 graduation ceremony, where many lessons were learned about how to successfully broadcast a live program, Hitt said.
