OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK — The Lake Angeles-Heather Park trailhead will be closed for two days next week while helicopters move logs from the Heart O’ the Hills area to Lake Angeles, where they will be used to upgrade the area.
The trailhead and both trails between Klahhane Ridge and Heart O’ the Hills will be closed Monday and Tuesday while helicopter crews move the logs, said Barb Maynes, Olympic National Park spokeswoman, in a statement.
The logs are remnants of wind-blown trees that are a fire hazard for nearby private homes in the Lake Dawn area, she said.
They will be moved up to Lake Angeles, which is about 4,200 feet in elevation in the northern part of the park between Heart O’ the Hills and Hurricane Ridge.
The logs will be used to delineate camp areas and trails as part of a restoration project.
Workers also will revegetate more than 8,000 square feet of bare ground, using native plants grown in the Olympic National Park Matt Albright Native Plant Center at Robin Hill Farm County Park, Maynes said.
During the closure, hikers may access Klahhane Ridge from the Switchback and Klahhane Ridge trails.
The Heart O’ the Hills campground will remain open, but the noise from the helicopters may be loud, Maynes warned.
If the weather is bad, flights may be rescheduled, Maynes said.
