Headrick appointed to Port Angeles council vacancy

PORT ANGELES — The City Council late Tuesday night appointed former Councilman and Mayor Richard Headrick to a council vacancy.

Councilman Gary Braun said he and Councilman Grant Munro examined eight letters of intent and recommended adjourning to executive session to discuss those the pair “spent some time on.”

The council, about 11:05 p.m. Tuesday, voted 4-2, with Lauren Erickson and Betsy Wharton dissenting, to appoint Headrick.

Wharton, who was a planning commissioner at the time, defeated Headrick, a retired Clallam County District Court judge, in a hotly contested election last November by 55 percent to 45 percent of the vote.

The other applicants for the council, in addition to Headrick, were Peter Ripley, publisher of an online newspaper; Patrick Downie of Volunteer Chore Service; former Clallam Transit System General Manager Dan DiGuilio; Neil D. Spicher, a retired Pacific Bell construction engineer and English teacher; motivational speaker and current Planning Commission Chairwoman Cherie Kidd; former Planning Commissioner Linda Nutter; and artist Taylor Jennings.

Headrick succeeds Jack Pittis, who died Feb. 3 from heart complications, in council Position No. 2.
