Head-on collision injures five people

La PUSH — A head-on collision on U.S. Highway 101 Saturday sent one person to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle and injured four others, according to the State Patrol.

Jeremy S. Payne, 43, of La Push — who was injured but not transported to a hospital — was cited for second-degree negligent driving after he ran head-on into a car driven by Liliana Romero Castro, 49, of Toms River, N.J., while trying to pass at Milepost 218 near the Sol Duc Hot Springs Road entrance at 2:03 p.m. Saturday, troopers said.

One of Payne’s passengers, Shawnta Payne, 16, also of La Push, was transported to Harborview, where she was listed in satisfactory condition on Sunday. Another one, Delphina D. Williams, 50, of La Push was taken to Forks Community Hospital.

Also taken to Forks Community Hospital were Romero Castro and her passenger, Luis F. Rios, 37, also of Toms River.

Information was not available on Sunday from Forks Community Hospital.

Payne was traveling eastbound on Highway 101 when he attempted to pass another car and struck Romero Castro’s vehicle, which was traveling westbound, the State Patrol said.

Debris from the wreck hit the car he attempted to pass. None in the car were injured.

The driver was Carolyn S. Wilcox, 48, of Port Angeles. Passengers were Amanda E. Malone, 40, and Jeffrey M. Malone, 42, both of Cypress, Texas.

All those involved in the crash were wearing seat belts and no drugs nor alcohol were involved, the State Patrol said.

Vehicles driven by Payne and Romero Castro were completely destroyed, while Wilcox’s vehicle suffered reportable damage, troopers said.
