OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK — A bicycling organization wants to sway the minds of Olympic National Park officials to allow bicyclists on Hurricane Ridge Road during a two-year repair project.
A $12.7 million contract to repair portions of Hurricane Ridge Road damaged during December storms was awarded to Lakeside Industries of Port Angeles in February.
During the project — which is expected to begin this spring, although no date has been set — no bike riders would be permitted on the road, Barb Maynes, parks spokeswoman, has said.
Bicycle Alliance of Washington, which lobbies for the rights of cyclists on Washington roads, is urging bicyclists to write members of Congress and Sue McGill, interim park superintendent protesting the banning of bikes.
“We believe that this is an unnecessary exclusion of bicyclists on what is a federally funded road open to all other forms of traffic,” said the group on its Web site, www.bicyclealliance.org/,
