Green New Deal watch parties set in Port Angeles, Port Townsend on Tuesday

Olympic Climate Action will host two Green New Deal watch parties from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

A Port Angeles gathering will be at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St. Visitors will need to use the after-hours entrance west of the flagpoles.

In Port Townsend, the event will be at RoseWind Common House, 3131 Haines St., according to Olympic Climate Action.

The Green New Deal aims to transition to 100 percent renewable energy within 12 years, according to www.sunrise movement.org/gnd.

The U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change said in a report released in October that the world’s leading climate scientists have warned there is only a dozen years for global warming to be kept to a maximum of 1.5 C, beyond which even half a degree would significantly worsen the risks of drought, floods, extreme heat and poverty for millions of people.

The authors said that “urgent and unprecedented changes” are needed to reach the target.

Democrats Sen. Ed Markey of Massachusetts and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York have announced they will release Green New Deal legislation soon.

“Early support for an ambitious bill like this is crucial, and climate activists plan to send a strong message to their members of Congress in the coming weeks,” said Ed Chadd of Olympic Climate Action.

“The Sunrise Movement, credited with putting momentum behind the Green New Deal concept, will lay out their game plan via livestream at this event, which will be viewed by thousands of people at more than 400 watch parties around the country,” he said.

Chadd continued: “This event will coincide with the rescheduled State of the Union address,” which is set for is set for 6 p.m. Pacific Standard Time. “History will determine which event carries more meaning.”
