Great array of North Olympic Peninsula events for a sunny weekend

Take advantage of free admission to the Olympic National Park on Saturday and Sunday.

Also, make room in your schedule for two annual events — the Forks Fly-In and Darlene Marihugh Memorial Cruz-In fundraiser — that will return to the Peninsula on Saturday.

Here are highlights of what’s going on.

Annual fly-in

FORKS — The 19th annual Forks Fly-In and Salmon Bake will be held at the Forks Municipal Airport from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Members of the public are invited to browse a flea market and show ‘n’ shine, which will feature cars and airplanes.

The Forks Lions Club will host the salmon bake.

Cruz-in fundraiser

PORT ANGELES — The fourth annual Darlene Marihugh Memorial Cruz-In fundraiser will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Hot rods and custom, muscle and classic cars will be on display in the parking lots of three adjacent businesses — Cowboy Country, 923 E. First St.; Jace The Real Estate Co., 933 E. First St.; and El Puerto de Angeles Mexican Restaurant, 940 E. First St.

El Puerto de Angeles will offer menu specials, and Cowboy Country will have an outdoor sale.

Root beer floats will be for sale to raise funds for Marihugh scholarships for high school seniors.

A free coloring contest with prizes will be hosted by Jace.

DJs Double Exposure will provide music.

Other highlights will include door prizes, car awards and a raffle for a custom 1932 Ford pedal car, which is on display at Jace.

Open house

SEQUIM — An open house will be held at the Precious Life Animal Sanctuary, 282 Eggloff Road, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

There is no cost to attend.

Donations will be accepted for the nonprofit animal sanctuary, which rescues and provides homes for abused, neglected and abandoned farm and companion animals.

Basketry, exercise

CHIMACUM — Two workshops will be held at Finnriver Farm, located on Barn Swallow Road, this month.

Elaine Grinnell, a basket weaver and Jamestown S’Klallam tribal elder, will present a Native American basketry workshop from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Participants will make small cedar baskets and reed baskets.

Cost is $60 plus a $15 materials fee.

Outdoor concert

PORT TOWNSEND — Friends of Fort Flagler will present Danny Schmidt in concert at Fort Flagler State Park at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Schmidt received the Kerrville New Folk Award in 2007.

Admission is a donation of $5 a person.

Tribal events

SEQUIM — The Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe will host three events during the Sequim Lavender Festival today and Saturday.

Two events, “Totem Tour” and “Stories by the Bay,” will be held at the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribal Center, 1033 Old Blyn Highway.

“Unwind by the River” will be presented at Railroad Bridge Park, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road.

The events are:

nTotem Tour — Participants will take a guided tour of the Jamestown S’Klallam tribe’s totem poles from 4 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. today.

Space is limited to 25 people.

Reservations are required.

Tickets are $20 a person or $60 for the tour and Stories by the Bay dinner.

nStories by the Bay — Members of the public are invited to explore the tribal campus from 5:15 p.m. to 6 p.m. today.

A traditional salmon dinner will be served from 6 p.m. to 6:45 p.m., followed by stories by Elaine Grinnell.

Tickets are $45 for adults and $25 for children.

Profits will be donated to the operations budget of the Dungeness River Audubon Center.

The tribe’s carving shed will be open between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Carvers will be available to answer questions and demonstrate carving techniques.

Dale Faulstich, carver and co-author of Totem Poles of the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe, will sign copies of his book, which will be for sale for $15.

• Unwind by the River — Dinner, wine and dessert will be served from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday.

Participants are invited to tour the grounds, view displays and listen to music by the Black Diamond Fiddlers.

Tickets are $25 a person.

They will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Profits will be donated to the operations budget of the Dungeness River Audubon Center.

Quilters show

SEQUIM — Sunbonnet Sue Quilt Club’s 23rd annual quilt show will be at Sequim Middle School, 301 W. Hendrickson Road, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today, Saturday and Sunday.

More than 200 quilts created by club members will be on display.

The quilt show will include demonstrations of quilting techniques on community quilts and a “merchants mall” with quilting items for sale.

Door prizes will be given each day.

Tickets for the 2009 raffle quilt can be purchased at the show. The quilt will be raffled Sunday afternoon. The winner need not be present to win.

The quilt show is two to three blocks from the Lavender Festival Street Fair.

Free transportation to the quilt show is available on the Lavender Festival shuttle bus, which runs every 15 to 20 minutes from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Those going to the quilt show can park at either the QFC or the J.C. Penney lot and take the shuttle bus into town.

Parking also is available at Sequim Middle School.

Driftwood demo

PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula Driftwood Artists will put on a demonstration at the Port Angeles Public Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday.

This demonstration is part of “Hands to Art: Clallam Co. Crafters Show Their Stuff.”

Driftwood show

SEQUIM — Olympic Driftwood Sculptors will hold a driftwood art show and sale at the Carlsborg Conference Center, 865 Carlsborg Road, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 17 and 18, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

In addition to sculpture displays, there will be unfinished wood and items made from driftwood for sale.

There also will be wood-finishing demonstrations.

Discussion group

SEQUIM — The Sequim Great Decisions Discussion Group will meet at Sequim Public Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., from 10 a.m. to noon today.

The discussion topic is “How Development Leads to Democracy.”

Discussion topics are taken from the Foreign Policy Association’s Great Decisions 2009 publication and current articles in Foreign Affairs magazine.

Botany hike

PORT ANGELES — The Olympic Chapter of the Washington Native Plant Society will lead a 7.4-mile botany hike along Grand Ridge Trail, from Deer Park to Obstruction Point, on Saturday.

Book signing

Another book, Never Too Old To Chase A Dream, will be previewed at the book signing.

Border Patrol protest

Stop the Checkpoints will hold a picketing protest against the Border Patrol’s bus boardings at Discovery Bay.

The protest will begin at Fat Smitty’s in Discovery Bay at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Participants should wear lavender clothing and bring picket signs.

A carpool will leave Port Angeles at 12:30 p.m.
