Graving yard issues expected at Port Angeles multicultural group meeting Monday

PORT ANGELES — While not on the agenda, tensions over the shutdown of Port Angeles’ Hood Canal Bridge graving yard are expected to be discussed by the city’s Community Multicultural Task Force at its meeting Monday.

The meeting, open to the public, begins at 3 p.m. in the City Council chambers at City Hall, 321 E. Fifth St.

The committee serves as an advisory group to the City Council and meets quarterly, or as events warrant.

Monday’s agenda items include discussion about a fund-raiser to bring “Haley’s Comet,” actor John Amos’ one-man play about racial and political issues, to Port Angeles, and welcoming student ambassadors from Port Angeles’ sister city of Mutsu City, Japan.

But community members are expected to talk about tensions and allegations of racism related to the Lower Elwha Klallam tribe and the graving yard during the public comment section of the meeting.

17-member task force

The 17-member task force, chaired by Mayor Robert Headrick, last met on Oct. 27 and heard mostly trouble-free reports from Police Chief Tom Riepe, school district officials and others.
