Grants awarded to Port Angeles district educators

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Education Foundation recently awarded SPICE grants totaling $65,410 to educators throughout the Port Angeles School District.

SPICE, or Supporting Projects of Innovation, Creativity and Excellence, grants are available to staff members across the Port Angeles School District and may not be used for existing programs, mandated programs or staff salaries.

“We’re so pleased to provide a variety of books, science, music, technology and equipment, and cultural experiences to Port Angeles public school students,” said Michelle Turner, the foundation’s grant committee chair,

This year, grants were awarded to:

• Tanner Zahrt, all schools, Youth Day at the Juan de Fuca Festival of the Arts, $3,000.

• Vicki Helwick all elementary students, Seattle Opera Tour in Port Angeles, $3,000.

• Meghan Hoekman, Dry Creek, Hamilton, Jefferson elementary schools, “A Little Spot” social-emotional learning educator’s starter kit, $780.

• Lambert Grimes, Dry Creek and Hamilton elementary schools, Turning the Wheel: movement, art and writing activities workshops and performances, $6,075.

• Karen Doran, Research, Innovation and Development Grants in Economics program at Dry Creek Elementary School, Law and Order: learning inquiry in social studies, $1,500 Trudy Kindler Native American Studies Grant.

• Patricia Hopkins, 2nd-graders at Dry Creek Elementary School – submitted by — creative choice learning to practice social interaction skills, $508.

• Angela Sickles, 6th-graders at Dry Creek Elementary School, Survivor: multi sensory activity to grow social interaction skills, $750.

• Stephanie Farrier, 4th- through 6th-graders at Dry Creek Elementary School, high interest texts to improve reading efficiency, $6,084.

• Polly Hawthorne, the library at Dry Creek Elementary School, books to increase Native American culture and history resources, $782.

• Anthony Seidl, 4th-graders at Dry Creek Elementary School – submitted by – salmon hatchery ecology studies – $500

• Miranda Laidig, 4th-graders at Dry Creek Elementary School, Learning our Community’s History field trips, $950 Trudy Kindler Native American Studies Grant.

• Bonnie Schmidt, general music classes at Dry Creek Elementary School, general music support, $1,102.

• Jennifer Soule, kindergarteners and 1st-graders at Franklin Elementary School, Digging Deeper through the Arts, $,1650.

• Sarah Schaefermeyer, Drama Club at Franklin Elementary School, headset microphones, $1,330.

• George Kheriaty, 3rd- through 5th-graders at Hamilton Elementary School, rocket science building and launch, $1,080 Joe Glatz Rocket Man Grant.

• Kahle Dietz, 6th-graders at Hamilton Elementary School, Seattle Museum of Flight field trip, $1,165.

• Melissa Holcomb, 3rd-graders at Jefferson Elementary School, Publishing our Books: student writing and illustrations, $390.

• Raena Young, 4th-graders at Jefferson Elementary School, Farm to School field trips, $2,020.

• Raena Young, 4th-graders at Jefferson Elementary School, swimming lessons, $2,070 Patti Reifenstahl Memorial Grant.

• Claire Jones, 4th- and 5th-graders at Jefferson Elementary School, salmon hatchery science, $2,500.

• Christine Bohman, kindergarterners through 6th-graders at Jefferson Elementary School, Missoula Children’s Theatre workshop and performance, $3,700.

• Erika Kuch, 3rd-graders at Roosevelt Elementary School, Seattle Children’s Theatre field trip, $1,750.

• Katrina Leslie, 6th-graders at Roosevelt Elementary School, local history tours, $750 Trudy Kindler Native American Studies Grant.

• Kelly Sanders, 6th-graders at Roosevelt Elementary School, Moby Max to assess and improve foundational learning skills, $738.

• Debbie Tiemersma, World Language classes at Stevens Middle School, Flangoo online literacy resources in Spanish, French, and German, $179.

• Christine Spaulding, Technology Student Association at Stevens Middle School, scholarships for dues and state conference, $1,075.

• Angela Tamas, all students at Lincoln High School, Museum of Pop Culture field trip, $2,292.

• Allison Evans, International Culture Club at Port Angeles High School, shared culture through cooking and events, $1,800.

• John Gallagher, Science Club at Port Angeles High School, events and lectures in the Seattle area, $3,000.

• Adam Logan, science classes at Port Angeles High School, Olympic Peninsula science in the field, $1,200.

• Stacey Sanders, civics/political science classes at Port Angeles High School, trip to state Capitol in Olympia, $1,500.

• Jarrett Hansen, percussion ensemble at Port Angeles High School, vibraphone and orchestra bells, $6,025, partially funded by Rich Boyd Grant for the Arts.

• John Lorentzen, choral ensembles at Port Angeles High School, performance uniforms, $2,986.

• Shannon Hamblin, 600 Building at Port Angeles High School, weatherproof bulletin board to showcase student work, $901.

• Birgit Andrich, 9th- through 12th-graders at Port Angeles High School, food supplies for intervention room, $278

In addition to the SPICE grants, the foundation also awarded grants to AmeriCorps and to Peninsula Performs!

AmeriCorps received a $10,000 grant in support of tutors and mentors it provides to the Port Angeles School District.

Peninsula Performs!, a program of Field Arts and Events Hall that connects professional artists to students and educators in the classroom, received an $11,000 grant.
