Glass Art Festival ‘mushrooming’ Sequim’s Museum & Arts Center

SEQUIM — In its first year, the Glass Art Festival at Museum & Arts Center of the Sequim-Dungeness Valley has attracted more than 60 glass artists and 120 works of colorful, creative glass art.

The glass art exhibit is displayed all this month at the MAC, 175 W. Cedar St., Sequim.

Priscilla Hudson, a MAC board member, said the event is “mushrooming for us” — and added that artists have expressed gratitude that the Sequim center has provided an all-glass art venue, not mixing it with other art media.

The festival’s exhibit includes the works of 11 Sequim artists, two from Port Angeles and one from Port Hadlock.

But works from artists as far away as Australia, Greece and Turkey can be found, as well as those from New York, Arizona, California, Canada, Washington, D.C., and Seattle.

“This exhibit has been so exciting, especially hearing the wonderful responses from the visitors, many of which have been from out of town, as well as the appreciation of the artists who have their work in the show,” said Connie Alexander, Museum & Arts Center of the Sequim-Dungeness Valley board member, glass artist and event organizer.

Hudson, who coordinates historical programs, pointed out two pieces exhibited by Sidney Percy, a 17-year-old Maple Valley artist, the youngest on exhibit.

Juried awards are best in show, Susan Temple, “Leads & Waterways II”; second place, Chris Heilman, “Plum Blossom in Gold Ruby Red”; third place, Jonathon Patton, “Numinous Journey”; Vicki Coons Memorial Award, Gioia Boerrigter, “Under the Bigtop”; director’s award, selected by DJ Bassett, MAC interim executive director, Carol Ireland-McLean, “Petroglyph # 1”; curator’s award, selected by Connie Alexander, Steven Wrubleski, “Musical.”

Merit awards are Michael Dupille, “New Life”; Joline El-Hai, “Proton Dahlia”; and Michelle Rial, “Converge,” sponsored by CBS Dichroic; Cynthia Thomas, “Losing One’s Marbles # 1,” sponsored by Olympic Stained Glass; Luther Bullock, “Egret”; Melissa Penic, “I Vant to be Alone”; Dorothy Wayne, “Winter Snow,” sponsored by the MAC and Uroboros Glass.
