Giving Tuesday kicks off season of charity

After Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday is Giving Tuesday.

Nineteen North Olympic Peninsula organizations have signed up on the #Giving Tuesday website at http://www.givingtuesday.org, but that list is not exhaustive.

Many organizations, such as the Northwest School of Wooden Boat Building, have eschewed signing up on the Giving Tuesday website and instead are urging donations on their own.

#Giving Tuesday was created in 2012 to use social media to fuel charitable donations, according to the founders, the Belfer Center for Innovation &Social Impact at the 92nd Street Y in New York City.

Among those participating on the Peninsula is the Port Townsend School of the Arts, which hopes to match a $5,000 challenge grant on one day — Tuesday.

“A generous sponsor has offered up a challenge to the school,” said Dan Groussman, school president.

“If we can raise $5,000, that amount will be matched and even increased.”

Community members can help the school secure the challenge grant by donating on the school website, www.ptArts.org, or on the school’s Facebook page on Tuesday.

“Supporters are also encouraged to share the PTSA #GivingTuesday image and content across social media accounts,” Groussman said.

Others signed up on the Giving Tuesday website are:

• Port Townsend Main Street Program.

• Centrum.

• United Way of Clallam County.

• Olympic Peninsula YMCA.

• Habitat for Humanity of Clallam County.

• Habitat for Humanity of Jefferson County.

• North Olympic Land Trust.

• The Boiler Room.

• Copper Canyon Press.

• Organic Seed Alliance.

• Northwind Arts Center.

• Walkable and Livable Communities Institute.

• KPTZ Radio.

• North Olympic Salmon Coalition.

• Northwest Maritime Center.

• Maritime Discovery Schools.

• The ReCyclery.

• Radio Port Townsend.

#Giving Tuesday now has engaged more than 30,000 organizations worldwide, founders say on the website.

Last year, #Giving Tuesday was mentioned nearly a million times on Facebook alone and raised more than $700,000 for charities, according to a news release.
