Gateway project to close part of Lincoln Street

PORT ANGELES – The portion of Lincoln Street between Front Street and Harbor Towne Mall will close to vehicle and pedestrian traffic Nov. 8-10 and Nov. 12-17 as part of the Port Angeles International Gateway Transportation Center construction project.

The first closure is for backfilling of the area between the steel sheet piles along Lincoln Street and the future Gateway Center’s eastern wall.

The second closure is for removal of steel sheet piling installed in late July and early August to hold up the hillside beneath Lincoln Street during pile driving work.

No work will be done on Sunday, Nov. 11.

Lincoln Street will reopen after work is done each day, about 5 p.m., said city spokeswoman Teresa Pierce.

The schedule comes with the usual disclaimer that it is dependent upon weather and the contractor’s progress, she said.

Pierce also reiterated that pedestrians are not allowed to walk along fencing along the project’s east side along Lincoln Street and its south side along Front Street.

“The construction fencing extends too close to the vehicle traffic to provide safe access for pedestrians. They are required to cross the street and use sidewalks on the other sides of Lincoln and Front streets,” she said.

Gateway Center construction began in June and is expected to last until late summer 2008.

The $13.8 million project will include a transit building with a public plaza and bus lane plus a two-tiered parking garage, clock tower and pavilion roof covering the plaza.

Construction updates are available on the city’s Web site at www.cityofpa.us/gatewayproject.htm.
