Gateway clock tower out of sync

PORT ANGELES — What time is it?

If you were to seek the answer to that question from The Gateway’s clock tower, its hands would provide you with two incorrect answers.

The $40,000, four-faced clock tower was installed in August 2008 at Lincoln and Front streets.

It has been out of sync for the last couple of months, said Corey Delikat, city parks and streets superintendent.

At 4:45 p.m. Thursday, three faces pointed to 4:40 and the other read 4:33.

Delikat said the city has been trying to fix the clock since it stopped telling the correct time.

“We’ve been messing with it for about two months now,” he said.

“It was just about fine, then one of the clocks decided to go about two minutes past.

“I have no idea why.”

Delikat said he switched off the clock tower’s chimes Tuesday since it didn’t sync-up with the hands.

“It was chiming in between the two” incorrect times, he said.

Delikat said if it doesn’t catch up by Monday, he will probably have to have someone from the manufacturer, The Verdin Company of Cincinnati, Ohio, come out to set it right.

The city has a warranty on the clock tower, he said.

Delikat said the city has followed the manual correctly and has sought advice from the company.

“It’s electrically reading what it should say; it’s just not relaying it right to the clock,” he said.
