Gateway Center pile driving resumes in downtown Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES — Now that results are back from the initial test pilings, pile driving will resume at the Port Angeles International Gateway Transportation site six days a week.

And so will the noise.

Work will be done from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. No work is expected on Sundays.

Pile driving may extend beyond 5 p.m. to allow for the contractor to completely finish driving a pile already in progress.

The pile driving will produce a loud, repetitive pounding as the circular piles are driven into the ground to support the Gateway Center’s foundation.

This pile driving phase of the project is expected to last for the next two weeks, depending upon weather and progress.

The $13.8 million Gateway Center will include a transit building with a public plaza with a pavilion roof, clock tower and a bus lane plus the two-tiered parking garage.

It is being built along Lincoln Street between Railroad Avenue and Front Street.

Primo Construction of Carlsborg began excavation work the first week of June and construction is expected to last until late summer next year.

Since the project’s pile driving phase has taken longer than originally expected, parking on the western part of the construction site — originally slated to close in mid-August — will close no sooner than Sept. 4.

Construction schedule updates are available on the city’s Web site at www.cityofpa.us/gatewayproject.htm.
