Gateway Center gets $1 million more in federal funding

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles International Gateway Transportation Center project has an additional $1 million in federal funding thanks to Sen. Patty Murray.

Murray was able to get the money included as part of a federal appropriations bill that included transportation funding.

The project that would transform property at Front and Lincoln streets into a bus parking and staging area and a public plaza now has received more than $5 million in federal funds.

“We are eternally grateful to Senator Murray,” said Mayor Karen Rogers.

“We thank her for her leadership and commitment to this project.”

Murray, D-Shoreline, called Rogers to tell her about the appropriation.

The Federal Transportation Administration money should be available this fall or in spring 2007, Rogers said.

Redesigned project

The City Council approved a redesigned Gateway Center on June 13.

The council also approved spending $308,550 for three consultants to revise the project’s engineering and architectural documents so it can go to bid by Aug. 27.

The bid opening is scheduled for late October, with the bid award in late December.

The nine to 12 months of construction could begin in late January.

The Gateway Center is slated for an area roughly bounded by Front Street and Railroad Avenue at Lincoln Street.
