Furtado, Price to perform in Port Townsend

PORT TOWNSEND — String wizard Tony Furtado and fiddle champion Luke Price will perform at The Palindrome at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Tickets to the Rainshadow Recording and Concerts performance are $25 each online at https://www.ticketstorm.com/e/28626/t/ or $30 cash or check at the door at The Palindrome at Eaglemount Cidery, 1893 S. Jacob Miller Road in Port Townsend.

Furtado is a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist adept on banjo, cello-banjo, slide guitar and baritone ukulele who lives in Portland, Ore.

Price is also a multi-instrumentalist performer who also lives in Portland, Ore. Price is the current, and five-time, Grand National Fiddle Champion.

Furtado, a native of Pleasanton, Calif., took up the banjo when he was 12, inspired by the Beverly Hillbillies television show and a sixth-grade music report.

He won the National Bluegrass Banjo Championship in Winfield, Kan., in 1987. Not long after that, he joined Laurie Lewis & Grant Street. A second victory at Winfield, in 1991, bookended his years with Grant Street.

In 1990, Furtado signed a recording deal with Rounder Records, one of the country’s preeminent independent record companies. Beginning with Swamped in 1990, he recorded six albums for the label.

Beginning in the late 1990s — influenced by such musical heroes as Ry Cooder, David Lind-ley and Taj Mahal — Furtado added slide guitar, singing and songwriting to his musical toolbox and began leading his own band. He has performed throughout the world at top venues and appeared at such music festivals as the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, High Sierra Music Festival, Jazz Aspen, Kerrville Folk Festival, Strawberry Music Festival, Winnipeg Folk Festival, Sisters Folk Festival, San Jose Jazz Festival and others.

“I love playing live,” he said. “All my energy is focused on the love of playing music and rolling with the moment. It’s a give-and-take from the audience to the stage and back.”

Price, who grew up in Boise, Idaho, has won a plethora of contests, awards and scholarships. He attended The Berklee College of Music in Boston, Mass., where he met his now wife and musical partner, Rachael Price, to form their Soul Pop band, “Love, DEAN.”

Price has toured, played and recorded with Scott Law, Jesse Harper (of Love Canon), Stephen Malkmus, Lee Ann Womack, Tristan and Tashina Clarridge, Simon Chrisman, Ben Krakauer, Matt Hartz and John Hermann, as well as Furtado.
