From Shakespeare to Monroe, activities abound this weekend

Everything from Shakespeare to Marilyn Monroe will be featured in Peninsula entertainment this weekend.

PORT ANGELES

Downtown movie tonight

PORT ANGELES — The Marilyn Monroe comedy “Some Like It Hot” will be screened at The Gateway, Front and Lincoln streets, tonight.

The movie is the story of two struggling musicians, played by Tony Curtis and Jack Lemon, who are seen witnessing a mob slaying and decide to go on the run by playing in an all-girl band — which includes singer Sugar Kane Kowalczyk, played by Monroe.

A Marilyn Monroe look-alike contest and a female impersonator contest will begin at 8:30 p.m. followed by a fashion show from Cottage Queen.

Prizes will be awarded for both contests.

The movie will start at dusk.

The movie is free, and limited concessions will be available for purchase.

Movie watchers will want to bring their own chair, pillow or blanket.

The film screening is sponsored by Odyssey Bookshop, Cottage Queen and the Port Angeles Downtown Association.

Tango dance set

PORT ANGELES — The Sons of Norway Lodge will host a milonga — a tango — dance tonight.

The dance will be at 7:30 p.m. at the lodge at 131 W. Fifth St.

Fundraiser slated

PORT ANGELES — A yard sale, car wash and bake sale fundraiser to support the new C&C Kids after-school program will be held Saturday.

It will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 507 N. Liberty St., Port Angeles.

Comfort and Cozy Learning Center has contracted with Port Angeles School District to provide after-school on-site care for children beginning in September.

Cub Scouts meet

PORT ANGELES — Cub Scout Pack 4686 will hold an informational meeting and swim session for kids in grades one through five and their parents at William Shore Memorial Pool, 225 E. Fifth St., from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

A $2 donation to cover costs is suggested.

Cub Scout leaders will answer questions about the program.

PORT ANGELES — The Port Scandalous Derby Dolls roller derby team will hold a car wash fundraiser Saturday.

Zen retreat set

PORT ANGELES — NO Sangha, a 14-year-old Zen community in Port Angeles, will hold a one-day zazenkai retreat from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

NO Sangha is at Murre Cottage, 420 W. Third St.

The retreat will include alternated zazen, which is seated meditation, and kinhin, walking meditation. Private, individual instruction will be available.

Silent coffee or tea breaks and a vegetarian soup and bread lunch will be offered.

A sutra — chanting — service will be held at 10 a.m. and at 1 p.m.

Sensei Kristen Larson, a teacher in the Diamond Sangha Teachers Circle, will give a dharma talk on Case No. 11 of the Wu-men kuan koan collection, “Chao-chou and the Hermits.”

Sol Duc Falls walk

PORT ANGELES — The Olympic Peninsula Explorers Volkssport Club will walk to Sol Duc Falls on Saturday.

Registration will be at 9 a.m. at Fairmount Restaurant, 1127 W. U.S. Highway 101.

A carpool will leave the Sequim QFC at 8:30 a.m.

The walk is not suitable for wheelchairs, strollers or baby joggers. Pets are not allowed.

Salmon bake set

SEQUIM — The Rotary Club of Sequim’s 42nd annual Rotary Salmon Bake will be Sunday.

The salmon bake will be from noon to 4 p.m. at Carrie Blake Park, 202 N. Blake Ave.

Along with fresh-baked salmon and pork barbecued on site, the event will offer live music, raffles, vendors and not-for-profit displays.

Shuttle service from parking lots south of Carrie Blake Park at Trinity United Methodist Church will be available.

Soft drinks and ice cream cups will be included with the meal.

A Rotary ShelterBox, similar to those sent to disaster areas around the world, will be on display and information booths will be available.

Tickets are $15 and can be purchased in advance from local Rotarians; at www.rotarysalmonbake.com; at the Sequim Safeway, 620 W. Washington St.; Walmart, 1110 W. Washington St.; QFC, 990 E. Washington St.; or at the door.

Proceeds benefit the Boys & Girls Club, Sequim youth activities, Boy Scouts, local charities and Rotary service projects.

Paws in the Garden

SEQUIM — Vision Landscape Nursery will host the seventh annual Paws in the Garden: Artists for Animals Benefit on Saturday and Sunday.

The benefit will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the nursery at 131 Kitchen-Dick Road.

The event includes musical performances, art, food and local animal welfare groups including Peninsula Friends of the Animals, Welfare for Animals Guild, Olympic Peninsula Humane Society and the Northwest Raptor & Wildlife Center.

Homebuyers class

SEQUIM SEmD A free first-time homebuyers class will be held at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.

Instructors trained by the state Housing Commission will provide information about purchase-assistance programs, eligibility requirements and current lending options.

Other subjects will include below-market-interest-rate loans, lending programs for low- and moderate-income borrowers, sweat-equity homeownership, new lending limits and credit.

The class will include presentations by a loan officer, a real estate professional and a home inspector.

It is offered by Olympic Community Action Programs and Homeward Bound, a community land trust serving Jefferson and Clallam counties.

Genealogical meeting

SEQUIM — Genealogist Mary Slawson will present “The Next Level in Genealogy: Paths to Improving Your Family History Research” on Saturday.

The presentation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Dungeness Valley Lutheran Church, 923 Sequim Ave.

It will be divided into four sections: “Tips for Making Family History Interview Better,” “Doing Your Family History with Style,” “What’s New in Family History” and “The Gaelic Family.”

The event is sponsored by the Clallam County Genealogical Society.

The cost for late registrants and those who are not members of the genealogical society is $35.

Slawson is a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists, and the author of Getting It Right: The Definitive Guide to Recording Family History Accurately.

SmileMobile in Forks

FORKS — The SmileMobile, a mobile dental clinic, will be in Forks through Aug. 27.

The mobile clinic arrived Wednesday. It is parked next to the Quillayute Valley School District, 411 S. Spartan Ave.

It offers discounted dental care for children of low-income families.

It is from the Washington Dental Service Foundation, in partnership with the Seattle Children’s Hospital.

FORKS — The Clallam County Master Gardeners plan a plant clinic at Forks Outfitters/Ace Hardware on Saturday.

A class on composting is set from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Gardeners can bring plants for identification or help with disease.

PORT TOWNSEND/JEFFERSON COUNTY

Sailboat racing

PORT TOWNSEND — The North American 6 Metre Association Championship sailboat races will be held in Port Townsend Bay this weekend.

There are five races on Saturday and two races on Sunday, starting about 11 a.m. each day.

Depending on winds, the races should be in the middle of the bay between Port Townsend Boat Haven and Indian Island.

The best public viewing will be from the Larry Scott Trail on waterfront.

Hosted by the Port Townsend Sailing Association, from eight to 12 boats are expected to participate from Western Washington, Maine and Canada.

No 6-meter boats from the North Olympic Peninsula are in the races.

Clothes Swap

CHIMACUM — A children’s Clothes Swap is planned at the Tri-Area Community Center on Saturday.

The swap, sponsored by Olympic Community Action Programs, will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the center at 10 West Valley Road in Chimacum.

Those who want to donate clothes for the swap can bring them to the center between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. today.

Those who bring clothes will receive coupons entitling them to equivalent items during the swap.

Clothing also will be available for purchase for $1 each item.

About 1,000 pieces of clothing are expected to be distributed.

‘The Tempest’ performed

PORT TOWNSEND — Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” will be performed in Chetzemoka Park tonight, Saturday and Sunday.

“The Tempest” is this year’s Shakespeare in the Park production from Key City Public Theatre.

The show begins at 6 p.m. each Friday, Saturday and Sunday through Aug. 22.

Seating begins at 5:30 p.m. at Chetzemoka Park at Jackson and Blaine streets in Port Townsend; patrons are urged to bring blankets and dress warmly.

Admission is pay-what-you-wish, though the suggested donation is $18 per person Fridays and Saturdays, $15 Sundays or $10 for students at all shows.

Picnics are welcome, while light fare is available from the concession stand.
