Free workshop set March 24 in Sequim to help those interested in running for school boards

SEQUIM — Registration is being accepted for a workshop for prospective school board candidates Tuesday, March 24.

The workshop — the only one planned on the North Olympic Peninsula — will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Sequim School District boardroom at 503 N. Sequim Ave.

The workshop is free. Online registration is recommended at http://bit.ly/1A56gIz.

The Sequim workshop will be one of 14 “Become a School Board Member” workshops hosted by the Washington State School Directors’ Association to encourage residents to serve on their local school boards.

The association will provide an overview of the roles and responsibilities of a school board member and how to file to become a candidate.

Candidate filing week begins May 11 for the August primary.

‘Feel comfortable’

“We want to help people feel comfortable with the election process and understand the work of school directors,” said Alan Burke, the association’s executive director.

“We encourage anyone who has ever thought about running for school board to come and learn,” Burke said.

“There is no obligation to run after attending the workshops, but the workshops will be very informative for anyone considering it.”

Workshops also are planned in Olympia, Seattle, Marysville, Mount Vernon, Kelso, Tacoma, Cle Elum, Omak, Wenatchee, Yakima, Pasco, Spokane and Chewelah.
