Free tax preparation continues at Shipley Center

IRS-certified AARP Tax-Aide volunteers continue to prepare and electronically file tax returns at several venues on the North Olympic Peninsula.

The tax preparation service is free of charge. The Tax-Aide program is sponsored by the IRS and the AARP Foundation, and is available for low-and moderate-income taxpayers of all ages.

Volunteers are authorized to prepare most basic tax returns, ensuring that the taxpayer receives all eligible deductions and credits.

They work with everything from first-time taxpayers to students to working families to retirees.

The volunteers do not prepare returns for taxpayers who have income from rental properties or for taxpayers with complicated business returns.

Volunteers will file returns through this year’s deadline of April 17.

Because April 15 — the traditional deadline — falls on a Sunday, the deadline would have moved to Monday, April 16.

However that is Emancipation Day, a legal holiday in the District of Columbia, so the nation’s filing deadline is April 17.
