PORT TOWNSEND — Two free walks in the park are set for this Sunday with AmeriCorps service members Maggie Baker and Suzy Elbow.
Fort Worden State Park is the place for this pair of outings, one hour each, that look into the interconnectedness of forests and the impacts of climate change.
Advance signup is required for each walk. Here are the details:
• 10 a.m.: Climate Conversations explores how climate change is likely to affect the natural, historical and cultural resources of Fort Worden.
Led by Baker, this beach stroll will include opportunities for conversations about participants’ climate observations and reflections.
Email margaret.baker@parks.wa.gov for more information and to reserve a spot.
• 1 p.m.: Lending a Helping Branch: The Interconnectedness of Forests is a walk down the Peace Mile trail to learn about how different species in the forest work together to create a resilient community.
Elbow will discuss forest ecology, resource-sharing through mycorrhizal fungi and tree distress signals, among other phenomena.
Email suzannah.elbow@parks.wa.gov for more information and to reserve a place.
Supported by donors, Friends of Fort Worden is funding the AmeriCorps positions for the second consecutive year.
