Four former applicants to seek latest Port Angeles council vacancy

PORT ANGELES — Four of seven unsuccessful applicants for a City Council vacancy in February say they will apply for the latest opening announced Tuesday.

All four said they will submit letters of interest for the position created by the resignation of six-year Councilwoman Lauren Erickson, effective May 31.

Erickson was absent from Tuesday’s council meeting and won’t return to her job as Clallam County deputy prosecuting attorney until Monday, according to a recorded message on her telephone.

The council appointee will serve the remainder of Erickson’s term, which expires Dec. 31, 2007, and will have to run in the November 2007 election to retain the seat.

Anyone eligible to run for City Council — a registered voter who has lived within the city limit for at least a year — is eligible to submit a letter of interest, Mayor Karen Rogers said.

Letters of interest should be addressed to the City Clerk, City of Port Angeles, P.O. Box 1150, Port Angeles, WA 98362, or taken to City Hall at 321 E. Fifth St.

The list of applicants apparently will include motivational speaker and Planning Commission Chairwoman Cherie Kidd, a two-time council candidate, and online publisher Peter Ripley, who also has sought election twice.

Those who applied last winter and said they’ll send letters again include former downtown gallery owner Taylor Jennings, and ex-Planning Commissioner and land developer Patrick Downie of Volunteer Chore Services.

Former Clallam Transit System General Manager Dan Di Guilio, who now works for Olympic Community Action Programs, said he won’t apply for the vacancy.

Neil Spicher, a retired Pacific Bell engineer and English teacher, and Linda Nutter, a Peninsula College instructor and former Planning Commission chairwoman, have not announced any intentions.
