Allan Bentley, a former chairman of the Clallam County Republican Party, has died.
He was 86.
Bentley died Sept. 28 at a nursing home in Everett, where he was being cared for after suffering a fall, said Dick Pilling, current chairman of the county Republican Party.
Bentley, a retired insurance broker, also was a past president of the Rotary Club of Port Angeles and a member of the Port Angeles Business Association.
Pilling described Bentley as a “stalwart Republican” who remained active in the party’s activities long after his service as chairman ended.
Bentley was always more than willing to share his thoughts but was not a “firebrand,” Pilling said.
“He would share his opinion with you, but he was compassionate,” Pilling said.
John Brewer, publisher and editor of the Peninsula Daily News, remembered Bentley as “warm, genuine, thoughtful . . . an old-school gentleman, a very effective leader who was also caring, polite and kind.”
“He knew how to present political arguments in a clear, forceful but always respectful way, often with a twinkle in his eye and a smile on his lips,” Brewer said.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
