FORKS — An 8-year-old boy was airlifted to a Seattle hospital after a two-car wreck in Forks after which one man fled.
Jesse G. Widder, 8, of Forks was no longer on the patient roster Saturday at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, which had reported he was in satisfactory condition Friday.
The State Patrol reported that at 3:45 p.m. Thursday, a 2002 Buick Rendezvous driven by Kevin S. Penn, 53, of La Push hit a Ford Taurus being driven by Wesley G. Schumack, 37, of Forks near 939 Mora Road.
Both vehicles were traveling east when the Buick hit the Ford from behind, the State Patrol said. The Ford left the roadway and struck a tree, troopers said.
Schumack, the driver of the Ford, is reported to have fled the scene on foot. Detectives were searching for him in the Forks area Friday, according to Trooper Russell Winger, State Patrol spokesman.
The 8-year-old and Cameron M. Widder, 11, also of Forks, were in the Ford. Cameron was treated at the scene.
Neither Schumack nor the juvenile passengers in the Ford were wearing seat belts, according to the State Patrol.
Penn, who was traveling alone, was not hurt, the State Patrol said. Penn is to be recommended for charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and reckless endangerment, Winger said.
The cause of the wreck is under investigation.
