Forks woman named Department of Natural Resources region manager

FORKS — Longtime Forks resident Susan Trettevik has been named the manager of the state Department of Natural Resources’ Olympic Region.

Trettevik has served as acting region manager since September 2009. She oversees DNR programs throughout the region, which includes Clallam and Jefferson counties and the northwest portion of Grays Harbor County.

“Susan has lived and worked in Forks for many years and knows the community and its needs well,” said Commissioner of Public Lands Peter Goldmark as he announced the appointment this week.

“Her 25 years with DNR and her commitment to forestland planning and sustainable timber management make her a natural fit to lead operations in this important region of the state.”

From the DNR region headquarters in Forks, Trettevik will oversee 371,000 acres of state forest, agriculture, and urban lands that generate millions of dollars in non-tax revenue each year for public schools, universities, county services, and other trust beneficiaries.

The region office also implements forest practices regulations and leads wildfire protection for state, private and tribal forestland in the area.

The DNR Olympic Region also is home to several popular recreation areas and the Olympic Experimental State Forest, in which the agency seeks to integrate wildlife habitat needs with sustainable timber harvesting practices.

Trettevik has worked most of her career with DNR, beginning in 1982 with timber sales in Forks. Since then, she has worked in the department’s forestland and landscape planning operations.

She also has been involved in the planning of the Olympic Experimental State Forest from its earliest conceptions to the present.

In her previous position as assistant region manager, she was responsible for the region’s programs for forest practices, fire management and management of inmate work crews.

Trettevik earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Washington State University.
