FORKS — First grade teacher Sherry Flanigan was named the first National Board Certified Teacher in the Quillayute Valley School District on Nov. 21.
The prestigious certification from National Board for Professional Teaching Standards has been compared to national board examinations for physicians and attorneys.
“That’s a good comparison. Being board certified shows that I’ve demonstrated my abilities and knowledge, and also been compared to the standards the national board set. I was ecstatic when I heard the news,” Flanigan said.
She decided to pursue the prestigious certification because elementary school teachers often don’t have higher levels of potential achievement available to them, Flanigan said.
She began working on the certification program in 2000, although some people complete in as little as one year.
