FORKS — Forks Police Chief Doug Price resigned unexpectedly at the Forks City Council meeting Monday night after only eight months on the job.
The letter of resignation was given to council members 20 minutes before the meeting began.
“We’re all still in a state of shock,” said Forks Mayor Bryon Monohon.
Price was at an out-of-town conference and unavailable for comment Tuesday.
He will remain on the job until the end of October, Monohon said.
The position will be posted by next week, and the city will attempt to find Price’s replacement by that time, he said.
Price, 54, a retired State Patrol detective sergeant, was selected from a pool of 13 applicants and joined the department in February.
“He did an excellent job,” Monohon said.
Price did incredible work with the department, mentoring young officers and moving the department in the right direction, Monohon said.
Price came into the job already knowing the area, having served at the State Patrol station in Forks from 1993 to 1995.
When Price took the reins almost eight months ago, the police chief position had been open for a year since Monohon fired Police Chief Mike Powell in January 2010.
