FORKS — A man accused of breaking into Chinook Pharmacy & Variety and taking narcotics from the Forks business was arrested by Forks police and a Clallam County sheriff’s deputy outside the city limit Tuesday.
Chuck Carlson, who owns the pharmacy at 11 S. Forks Ave., said the man tried to kick in a window, then threw a rock through the glass and took “a few bottles of pills” at about 4:45 a.m.
“He cut himself pretty bad on the way back out,” Carlson said. “He came in fast and went out fast.”
Neither the man’s name and hometown, nor the crime he is accused of were available Tuesday.
Carlson was alerted to the break-in by an alarm system inside the store.
He called PenCom, or Peninsula Communications — the regional dispatch center in Port Angeles — which immediately notified Forks police.
“We were on the scene just within a few minutes,” Forks Mayor Nedra Reed said.
After interviewing witnesses, law enforcement officers arrested the man outside the Forks city limit in unincorporated Clallam County, Reed said.
He was treated for injuries he sustained during the burglary at Forks Community Hospital and booked into Clallam County jail, Reed said.
Both Forks Police Chief Mike Powell and Deputy Chief Lloyd Lee were out of the office on Tuesday and were not available for comment, a Forks police spokeswoman said.
Clallam County Sheriff’s Office Chief Criminal Deputy Ron Cameron deferred to Forks police.
Reed declined to release the man’s name before he is arraigned in court.
The county’s online jail roster showed no Tuesday arrests for investigation of burglary.
Carlson said the drugs that were stolen were narcotics.
“It’s safe to say the drugs had a significant street value,” Reed added.
Carlson said the man appeared to be in his late 20s.
