FORKS — Predicted high temperatures and possible wind gusts have prompted a ban on outdoor burning in Forks.
Temperatures are expected to reach highs of high 70s and low 80s this week over much of the North Olympic Peninsula including Forks, according to the National Weather Service.
”These conditions could allow open flame fires to suddenly spread out of control,” according to a notice issued Friday about Monday’s order declaring the ban in Forks.
The ban prohibits the use of propane or other propellant-based torches to burn weeds, grasses or brush in yards, parking lots, driveways and other areas.
It does not ban open flame recreational fires such as small open fire pit, fire rings and chimney style fire pits.
Gas and briquette barbecues and smokers, and similarly contained means of cooking food outdoors, are permitted for use during this ban.
The area hasn’t experienced an unusual number of fires lately, said Forks Fire Chief Bill Paul on Friday.
But, “there are people still wanting to burn weeds and dead grass,” bringing up “potential issues.”
He doesn’t have any idea if conditions will worsen this summer.
“I can’t even make a comment,” he said. “Last night, we got a inch and a half of rain.
“We’re being proactive.”
