First Peninsula baby of 2016 born in Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES — Penelope Grace Goodwin was the first baby born on the North Olympic Peninsula in 2016.

Now, Christian and Kimberly Goodwin of Port Angeles, both 30, have two children who were born Jan. 2.

Penelope was born at Olympic Medical Center in Port Angeles at 9:12 a.m. Saturday.

Her older brother, 2-year-old Hunter Goodwin, also was born Jan. 2 in a Florida hospital, Christian said.

As of Saturday afternoon, no babies had been born at Jefferson Healthcare hospital in Port Townsend or Forks Community Hospital, staff at both facilities said.

The healthy baby girl is 20 inches in length and weighs 6 pounds, 12 ounces, Kimberly said.

Penelope arrived exactly when the doctor predicted she would, Kimberly added.

“This was her due date,” she said.

“I thought that was funny enough that the date was [Hunter’s] birthday. I didn’t actually think it was going to happen.”

Birthday parties

Sharing the same day of birth will “make birthday parties easier,” Christian said.

Kimberly is one of many new beginnings for the family.

The family relocated to Port Angeles about a month ago when Christian, a petty officer third class in the U.S. Coast Guard, was assigned to Air Station/Sector Field Office Port Angeles on Ediz Hook.

The family is still unpacking, Christian said. Their furniture arrived only about two weeks ago.

Both said they are ready to take on the challenge of rearing a newborn, including the lack of sleep that can come with it.

Kimberly said they will “just fly by the seat of our pants.”

This agave grew from the size of a baseball in the 1990s to the height of Isobel Johnston’s roof in 2020. She saw it bloom in 2023.
