First half property taxes due April 30

First half property taxes due April 30

Taxpayers in Clallam and Jefferson counties have until Monday, April 30, to pay their first half property taxes for 2018.

Property tax payments must be postmarked or dropped off at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., and the Jefferson County Courthouse, 1820 Jefferson St., by that date to avoid penalty and interest charges.

Mail dropped in a U.S. postal mailbox after the post office pick-up time could result in a postmark of May 1 and the payment would be considered delinquent, according to Clallam County Treasurer Teresa Marchi.

The only drop-off location in Clallam County is a gray drop box specifically designated for property tax payments and other courthouse business located within the circular drive at the Clallam County Courthouse.

Four drop boxes are available in JeffersonCounty.

• Drop box in rear parking lot of the courthouse.

• Port Townsend 1st Security Bank of Washington, 734 Water St.

• Port Hadlock 1st Security Bank of Washington, 10 Oak Bay Road.

• Port Ludlow Sound Community Bank, 9500 Oak Bay Road.

Taxpayers who require a receipt are asked to enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope with their payment.

Taxes may be paid in person at the Clallam and Jefferson county courthouses from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The treasurer’s offices can accept most credit and debit cards. In Clallam County, they can be paid at the Treasurer’s Office counter or online at www.clallam.net/Treasurer; a convenience fee will be charged by the credit and/or debit card provider.

Credit card payments in Jefferson County may be made online at http://www.co.jefferson.wa.us/329/Treasurer or by phone 1-877-812-8072.

Instructions for both are on the back of the tax statement, and a 2.5 percent fee is charged by the service provider for credit card payments.

Electronic checks may be used to make payments, and a $2 service fee is charged by the provider.

Payments postmarked or dropped off that are received after April 30 will be delinquent and subject to 1 percent interest on the full year amount, said CMarchi.

On June 1, an additional 1 percent interest and 3 percent penalty will be charged on the full year tax amount.

To request paperless tax statement delivery for 2019 via email instead of hard copies by USPS, sign up by clicking on the link “eNoticesOnline” on the Treasurer’s Office webpage, said Jefferson County Treasurer Stacie Prada.

There is no change to the 2018 taxes that were mailed in February, Marchi said, since Senate Bill 6614 will be enacted in 2019. The state property tax levy will be lowered from $2.70 per $1,000 of assessed value to $2.40.

To access one’s property tax information on-line, select “Property Search” in the left-hand column on the home-page of the Clallam County’s website at www.clallam.net.
