First activity today for Port Angeles Bike Everywhere Month

PORT ANGELES — The first of a month of activities to support National Bike Everywhere Month in Port Angeles will be a bike swap and sale today.

The event will be at Todd Fischer Studio at 439 W. Second St.

From 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. attendees can trade or sell bikes and bike-related items.

The City Council passed a resolution March 20 to support the promotion of the celebration recognized by the Bicycle Advisory Committee of Port Angeles and Clallam County.

City officials encourage community members to comment during a planning commission meeting in the Vern Burton Community Center’s meeting rooms Wednesday, May 9.

Input about how the city can best serve area cyclists is sought at the 5:30 p.m. meeting at the center at 308 E. Fourth St.

Other events planned are:

• 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday: The Port Angeles Farmers Market will hand one $1 market token to those who park their bikes in the green corral by H2O Waterfront Bistro at 222 N. Lincoln St. In addition, the Port Angeles Police Department will distribute free children’s helmets.

• Noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 19: A family scavenger hunt bike ride beginning at the City Pier Playground on North Lincoln Street and Railroad Avenue, and extending four miles along the Waterfront Trail. Helmets are required.

• 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday, May 23: A Bicycle Advisory Committee meeting at Vern Burton.

Recognized as a Bronze-level Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists since 2015, the city is working to improve area bicycling activities, amenities, and routes with the goal of obtaining a Gold-level designation.

Efforts include capital improvements on 10th Street, Race Street, and along the Olympic Discovery Trail, the city said in a news release.
