PORT ANGELES — Firefighters from multiple jurisdictions extinguished a fire in the metal recycling area at the Port Angeles transfer station.
The fire on Sunday at the landfill was about 200 feet by 25 feet in size, and flames were about 50 feet tall, according to a press release from the Port Angeles Fire Department.
No injuries were reported, and the cause was under investigation Monday.
The initial call at 5:21 a.m. Sunday was for smoke investigation at the landfill on West 18th Street. The Port Angeles Fire Department first responded with one engine and then requested additional resources, including an engine from Clallam 2 Fire-Rescue and a PAFD ladder truck.
Crews were on the scene for more than five hours and used an estimated 60,000 gallons of water to extinguish the fire, according to the press release.
The Port Angeles Fire Department responded with five personnel, Clallam 2 Fire-Rescue added four and Clallam County Fire District 3 also had four for a total of 13. The Port Angeles Police Department responded with an additional four personnel.
The city landfill provided two heavy equipment operators to sift through the debris from the fire.
