PORT TOWNSEND — Fourteen children from Everett-based Burned Children Recovery Foundation were hosted by the East Jefferson Fire-Rescue during a visit to Port Townsend this week.
“The kids really enjoy hanging out and doing normal things with other kids who have had similar experiences,” said Monday’s tour organizer Barry Pomeroy, son of Fire Chief Gordon Pomeroy.
“They’ve been down some tough roads, and events like this help with their emotional healing,” he said.
The children — all burn victims — started their visit with lunch at Nifty Fifties.
With fire department personnel as hosts, they toured the lower bunkers and lighthouse at Fort Worden State Park, then traveled to the newly completed fire station in Chimacum for a tour.
The Burned Children Recovery Foundation was founded in 1989 by Michael T. Mathis, who wanted to children and their families overcome the pain and hardships of re-entering their communities.
In addition to sending out more than 95,000 informational packets, the foundation operates National Camp Phoenix, where children are given tools to enjoy life and to teach about life as a survivor to people that do not understand.
