Firefighters extinguish blaze in fifth-floor hotel room

PORT HADLOCK — Firefighters from East Jefferson Fire Rescue and Navy Region Northwest extinguished a fifth-floor fire early Friday morning at the Old Alcohol Plant Inn.

Crews responded at 3:51 a.m. after the occupant of the room reported waking up to flames in a chair beside the bed, East Jefferson Fire Rescue reported.

“As she was evacuating the other occupants, she saw the nearby curtains and bedding catching fire and closed the door behind them,” the fire district stated in a press release. “Closing the door contained the fire to the room of origin, significantly limiting its spread to other areas of the building and reducing the risk of injury to other occupants.”

Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies and a Port Townsend police officer were first on the scene and manually pulled a fire alarm after they noted it wasn’t automatically activated.

First arriving fire crews pulled a hose line up to the fifth floor and extinguished the fire and ventilated the room of remaining smoke.

Two people were treated on scene for smoke inhalation but denied transport to a hospital, the fire district said.

The Jefferson County Fire Marshal’s Office was investigating the cause and reviewing the failure of the alarm system to automatically respond.

Additional support was provided by JeffCom 911, and Clallam County Fire District 3, East Jefferson Fire Rescue stated in the press release.
