Firefighter training burn set today in Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES — That smoke arising from Lauridsen Boulevard this morning is likely to be from training burns.

Starting at 8 a.m., firefighters from Clallam Fire District No. 2, Clallam County Fire District No. 4, and Port Angeles Fire Department will conduct live fire training at 1430 W. Lauridsen Blvd. and 1520 W. Lauridsen Blvd.

“Two small houses scheduled for demolition were donated to Clallam 2 Fire Rescue to be used for live fire training for our firefighters,” said Deputy Chief Jake Patterson.

“An invitation to neighboring fire agencies from the City of Port Angeles and Clallam County Fire District 4 (Joyce) was extended to include Clallam 2 Fire Rescue’s mutual aid partners.”

The structure at 1520 W. Lauridsen Blvd. will be demolished using a controlled burn by mid-morning, while the structure at 1430 W. Lauridsen Blvd. will be demolished using a controlled burn early to mid-afternoon, Patterson said.

No road closures are anticipated. Drivers can expect some increase of traffic in the area along with an increase in fire vehicle traffic during the day.

Smoke is likely in the area while the training is being conducted.

The Washington State Administrative Code (WAC) requires firefighters to participate in live fire training at least once every three years to maintain their qualifications.
